The Los Angeles Chargers came out strong in Week 8, overpowering the New Orleans Saints 26-8 and moving to a 4-3 season record. A blend of explosive plays and a stifling defense kept the Saints at bay throughout the game, making it a challenging day for New Orleans’ offense.
First Quarter
The Saints won the toss and opted to defer, putting the Chargers on offense. After a quiet start with both teams trading punts, the Saints managed the first points of the game with a safety following a Chargers’ misstep on a punt. This early advantage put New Orleans up 2-0. Late in the first quarter, Chargers QB Justin Herbert sparked the offense with a career-long 38-yard run, pushing Los Angeles into Saints territory.
Second Quarter
The Chargers grabbed the lead with a 46-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker early in the second quarter. After forcing another Saints punt, the Chargers’ offense managed to gain ground, aided by a defensive penalty that brought them close to the end zone. Running back J.K. Dobbins capitalized with a short touchdown run, making it 9-2. The Saints responded with a field goal before halftime, narrowing the Chargers' lead to 9-5.
Third Quarter
The Chargers’ defense remained relentless, quickly halting New Orleans' opening drive. Herbert then connected with Ladd McConkey for a spectacular 60-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 16-5. Despite a brief Saints rally with another field goal, the Chargers kept control, entering the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead.
Fourth Quarter
A long connection between Herbert and Joshua Palmer helped set up another field goal from Dicker, moving the score to 19-8. The Saints struggled to close the gap, missing a key field goal opportunity late in the game. Herbert capped off the win with a 9-yard touchdown pass to McConkey, securing the final score at 26-8.
The Chargers’ strong showing puts them on a solid footing heading into Week 9, where they’ll face the Cleveland Browns. Meanwhile, the Saints will need to regroup and address offensive inconsistencies as they prepare for their next matchup.
