Cajun Field was alive with excitement as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns returned home for their 2024 homecoming showdown against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Coming off a season full of road games, the Cajuns gave their fans plenty to cheer about with a decisive 55-19 victory. The win solidified Louisiana’s lead in the Sun Belt West division with a 7-1 overall record and a flawless 5-0 in conference play.

“This game has been on our minds since last season,” said head coach Michael Desormeaux. “We weren’t at our best against them last year, so we came out tonight with something to prove.”

A Strong Start on Both Sides of the Ball

The game opened with an impressive defensive stop by fifth-year senior safety Tyrone Lewis Jr., who intercepted a deep pass attempt, marking his fourth pick of the season. The turnover ignited Louisiana’s offense as quarterback Ben Wooldridge orchestrated a swift drive, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Harvey Broussard, putting the Cajuns up 7-0.

Kicker Kenny Almendares soon added a 44-yard field goal, bringing Louisiana to a 10-0 lead and tying the school’s field goal record. By halftime, the scoreboard told the story, with the Cajuns up 31-6, fueled by explosive plays from redshirt junior running back Dre'lyn Washington, who notched 123 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries.

Offensive Firepower: Washington and Perry Lead the Charge

Washington’s big night began with a 46-yard touchdown in the second quarter, showcasing his speed and the strength of the Cajun offensive line. "When you work, the outcome pays off," Washington said. "Our line was out there pushing, chasing the ball, giving us lanes."

Redshirt sophomore Zylan Perry joined the action with a four-yard touchdown run, building on the Cajuns' momentum. Arkansas State’s defense struggled to respond, allowing Louisiana’s offense to accumulate more than 300 yards by halftime.

Dominating Defense

The Cajuns’ defensive unit delivered a relentless performance, stifling Arkansas State’s efforts. Louisiana's defensive line, led by redshirt junior Jordan Lawson and senior linebacker K.C. Ossai, pressured Arkansas State’s backfield consistently. The duo combined for 17 tackles and Lawson achieved a career-high 2.5 sacks.

“You don’t forget the games you’re disappointed in,” Lawson reflected. “Last year’s game against Arkansas State was one of those, and we were determined to make sure it didn’t happen again.”

Sealing the Victory

In the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Chandler Fields stepped in, capitalizing on his snaps by driving the team into the red zone. Fields ended the drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown, widening the gap and emphasizing Louisiana’s control of the game.

Arkansas State managed a final score with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 55-19, but it was clear that this game belonged to the Cajuns. With this win, Louisiana continues its impressive season, fueled by a balanced offense and dominant defense, keeping fans excited as they march toward the postseason.

In a dominant display for their homecoming, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns showcased their relentless offense and strong defense, overwhelming Arkansas State 55-19. With standout performances from Dre'lyn Washington and other key players, the Cajuns remain undefeated in conference play, solidifying their position at the top of the Sun Belt West. This win marks a turning point, as UL looks forward to finishing their season with the same energy and focus.
